Favorite Photo Mysteries
Posted by Maureen

I’m taking a short vacation, so instead of a new column I’m taking a look back at some of my favorite mysteries.

Back in January I published a photo of the Hobo 8, a group of young people (above) smiling for the camera. It’s a great photo that captures the fun they were having. The sign and the 80 after it remain a mystery. Any ideas?

The problem of the Texas Twosome continues to be a challenge. I’ve taken these photos on the road with me and shown them in locales from coast to coast in the hopes of a new clue. I’ve outlined researchers’ ideas in a series of blog posts, linked below. Please let me know if you have any new thoughts on the matter.

A fun picture of another group of friends was the image from Clues from Hats and Backgrounds. I love the fact that photos are in the background. Those images could help solve the identity of the people in the photo, if only they were clearer.

I'm not sure about the sign "Hobo 8" but I'm betting this is the cast of a play or skit. The girl in the back row seems to be wearing a mop cap which is way out of the period unless she is playing a maid.

Re: The Hobo 8

The last two letters of "Hobo" are tinier than the rest of the word so maybe they wrote them again like:

Ho
Bo

and didn't cross out the 'Bo' from the original word. It seems as if the 'B' is the same in both. I don't think it's '80'.

Clues from Hats and Backgrounds:

After looking at your recent pictures from AGS with the mocked up airplane, etc. I had been wondering if this picture was of people all dressed up in Old Time clothing in a studio. Looking at the background you can see folding screens--somewhere to change into costume? I also wondered about the "room." On the left it looks like the outside of a house but on the right it looks like an inside wall. Some of the photos on the wall look like old ones but some with white borders look like more modern Kodak-type shots. One final note, it seems to me that the hairstyle of the man in the middle is more like the 20's with the slicked back middle part. What do you think? I'll be watching with interest for other ideas on this.

I was looking at your photo "Hobo 8" and came up with a suggestion. Britt, Iowa has a big Hobo Convention yearly which draws people from all over. It's been going on since about 1900. I went there several times as a child. Do you think it might have been an fun outing to that event?
