Made-Over Family Tree Maker Software Debuts
Posted by Diane

The Generations Network released Family Tree Maker 2008, successor to Family Tree Maker 16, after a brief (and unexpected) beta release period.

(The beta version stops working Aug. 24, so export your GEDCOMs now, folks.)

The new version got an extreme overhaul from the previous one, with a pretty look and new features including:
  • An interface that combines elements of a pedigree chart and a family group sheet  (here's the family view)

  • The ability to merge data from anywhere on the Web into your tree
  • Standardized criteria for rating genealogical sources
  • A place-name dictionary with more than 3 million locations
  • Lists that show people and events associated with a particular place
  • Timelines for your ancestors’ lives
  • Data imports from other programs, including Personal Ancestral File, The Master Genealogist and Legacy Family Tree
Read what Family Tree Magazine readers thought of the beta software in our online forum.

Family Tree Maker 2008 costs $39.95, or $54.95 with The Official Guide to Family Tree Maker 2008. As far as I could tell, an upgrade from Family Tree Maker 16 isn’t available, but we're checking on this.

Note Family Tree Magazine is not affiliated with Family Tree Maker software.

I just bought Family Tree Maker 16 late this spring and haven't even had time to install it yet! It is too late to get my money back. So, I want to know if this new 2008 version is worth taking a loss on my FTM 16 and just going ahead and popping again for the newer one. It irritates me greatly that FTM did not alert us in the spring that a new version was coming out this summer! If an upgrade from 16 isn't available now, do you think one will eventually be out?

Thanks..Meli

Hi, Meli,
Your irritation is understandable! For the past few years, Family Tree Maker has been coming out with new versions in August like clockwork. Since version 16 was available as a free upgrade from 2007, and since 2008 is so different from 16,I suspect we won't see an upgrade. But I'm still trying to get an answer for sure. There are people who are perfectly content with 16, so maybe stick with that one for awhile.

I have been using FTM 16 since sometime last fall and just received FTM 2008, which I have not installed. After reading the comments about the Beta version, I'm not sure whether I should install it. I do have a question, however. Should I decide to go ahead with the installation, will the new version pick up the information from FTM 16 or will I have to type in all in again? I also have my family tree on Ancestry.com. Can information be transferred from one to the other? I am relatively new at all this, since I have only been working on my family tree since last September.

Thanks,
Esther

I am now using FTM 2008 and have for the past two weeks. I have been using FTM since its inception. I feel that FTM 2008 is the best version so far. I found the new interface easier to navigate. I have used all the new features and am pleased with the performamnce. I was able to download my research from FTM 16 with no problem. I was able to locate a town in England where some of my 15th century ancestors had lived quickly using the place-name feature. I feel that FTM 2008 is well worth the money because of the recent changes.

Thanks,

John

In answer to Meli's question, a Generations Network rep told me there would be no upgrade from Family Tree Maker 16 to 2008, since 2008 was completely rewritten.

She also said 2008 will read all the way back to version 3. Esther, you'll want to export a GEDCOM from Family Tree Maker 16 and import it into 2008, then make sure everything tranferred correctly before uninstalling 2008. Also, the new version should work with Ancestry Member Trees. See the Family Tree Maker Knowledge Base at http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=l4z7XiKi for more help.
