Ancestry.com Launches Expert Connect
Posted by Diane

Just wanted to let you know that Ancestry.com’s ExpertConnect service, which we gave you some details on last month, is live at expertconnect.ancestry.com.

Project manager Lane Hancock says more than 400 genealogists have registered to provide genealogy services ranging from quick lookups to broad research projects. Experts who've registered to provide custom research must fulfill several qualifications.

Here’s what the site looks like:

Click Start a Project to begin the process of deciding what type of service you need and requesting bids from registered experts.

Or use the Find an Expert link (on th eleft side of the page) to search for specific experts to start a project with. You'll be able to select the type of service you need and the associated geographic location, heritage or religion, time period and/or repository. You'll get a list of experts who've indicated expertise in the options you selected. Click a name to see the person's profile.

Use the My Projects area to keep track of projects you've started.

It’s free to search the experts. After you've selected an expert for your project, you submit funds for the estimated cost to Ancestry.com. They’re held until the project is completed, then released to the expert.

See the Expert Connect FAQs for more on how the service works.

From what I've read, including the FAQs, it would seem than Ancestry.com does not take a percentage of the fees charged. Is this correct?

Hi! As we mentioned in our earlier Expert Connect post (linked above, Ancestry.com does take a cut for administering Expert Connect--but I don't see this addressed on the consumer site mentioned above or the provider site at http://expertconnect.ancestry.com/ProviderHome.aspx, either.

I just checked my notes from an Expert Connect meeting at the NGS conference last month--at that time, Ancestry.com was to get a 15 percent cut for custom research and a 25 percent cut for the other types of services.

Maybe I'm missing something or they are still working out the bugs. I went to expert connect as a client would and chose several services (photo op, record pick-up) only to have search results say there are no researches in that area. I am signed up as a provider and my profile lists these services and locations!?

This "400" number is quickly becoming an urban legend. If a researcher signs up with the ability to perform research in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois; Ancesty's Expert Connect seems to be counting that person as 3 researchers instead of 1. A neat little hat trick to make it sound like their pool of researchers is larger than what they actually have. Really though, what is Ancestry if not one big marketing machine? Regardless of their less than admirable service, they reel new members in like there's no tomorrow so I must give kudos to their marketing people.

There are a couple of alternatives to Expert Connect that started up last year and mentioned last month by Diane. I joined one of these called Genealogy Freelancers. Their fees are much lower than Ancestry's and I really feel that their entire program is much more agreeable than Expert Connect in how the professional is allowed to control the project. Regardless, there are some other sites out there as well. Anyway, It would be so nice to hear more about companies and services other than Ancestry. They really tend to be the topic of so many online blogs and newsletters.
