We Want Your Comments
Posted by Diane

One thing we love about blogs is they’re a two-way street. As much as our own thoughts fascinate us, what we really long for is to hear what’s going on in your head when you read the Genealogy Insider blog. Do you agree? Disagree? Want to add a related resource or tip?

To leave a comment in response to a blog post, click the word “Comments” in red below that post and scroll to the bottom of any already-existing comments. Type your name (or a name), and your e-mail address if you want (it’s not required). Type in your comment, then click Save Comment. You’ll have to go through the security rigamarole of entering a code word displayed in a graphic (you may have to do that twice), then your comment will appear in all its glory.

Some guidelines to what kind of posts are permissible:

1. Naturally, no cursing, personal insults or other offensive language is allowed.

2. Your comment must be related to the post you’re commenting on.

3. We may remove comments we deem to be advertising your own commercial product or service. Mentioning your product or service is fine, if it’s directly related to the post you’re commenting on and you’re up front that it’s your product.

4. Family Tree Magazine editors reserve the right to remove comments we judge to be inappropriate.

Have questions? Post 'em here, or send us an e-mail.

Whatever happened to the annual Family Tree Magazine SourceBook and Guidebook editions?

Hi, Allan,
We haven't been publishing those extra newsstand-only print editions for a couple of years now, in favor of doing special CD editions (such as the International Genealogy Passport and the State Research Guides CDs, along with annual compilations). You can see our available CDs at http://www.fwmagazines.com/category/family-tree-magazine-cds .

Comment on Researching Mysterious Family Deaths:
My paternal grandmother's 40-year-old maternal grandfather "Died at Sea, May 9, 1853", according to an inscription on his family marker in a Newburgh, NY, burial ground Where that happened and what was the cause, I don't think I'll ever know.
My maternal grandfather's paternal grandfather was born of PA Quaker immigrants in Nova Scotia in 1788, but by 1799 was in Chester County PA with remnants of his family. No record of his later marriage, nor of the time and place of his death, seems to exist. His son in my direct line was born in PA in about 1815.
When the latter died in Benton Harbor MI in 1896, somehow, erroneous data on his year of birth (which made him 13 years older than he actually was) was carved on his family marker. The erroneous data actually applies to a cousin of his who died in 1850 in PA.
My father's paternal grandparents both probably died separately in Brooklyn NY between 1880 and 1910, but a record of their deaths and place of burial does not survive.
My father's maternal grandmother died in 1845, shortly after arriving in NY with her family in 1845. Her maiden name may have been Jane Wilson, but that's all I know.

ANCESTRYBYDNA.COM RIPPED ME OFF. I sent $650.00 to get my mothers DNA done for her before she died. We never got the results. After many phone calls and almost a year later with assurances that everything was fine and we would receive our results, they finally admitted they were going out of business.
They told me however, that they would gladly reimburse my money but it would take a few weeks for me to see the refund. That was back in January. I tried calling again dozens of times, each time leaving them messages, begging them for my money. I even e-mailed numerous times and got no response there either. Last time I visited their WEB SITE, ANCESTRYBYDNA.COM, all contact information was gone from the site.
THEY RIPPED ME OFF! I know that when the economy gets better they will start their business back up, probably under a different name. BEWARE!
