Ancestry.com to Discontinue Expert Connect
Posted by Diane

Ancestry.com will discontinue its Expert Connect service, launched in June 2009 to link those seeking genealogy research services with service providers, as of March 18 of this year, according to an announcement today.

New project postings, bidding and awards will be discontinued Feb. 3, according to a message sent to service providers.

"Though this service has been a positive experience, Ancestry.com has decided to focus on other business priorities," stated the announcement.

It continued, "Both experts and members currently involved in Expert Connect have been notified of this update. We encourage members to finish out existing projects with experts they have located through the Expert Connect service and if needed, continue relationships for future projects they may have."

There is another site that offers the same type of services that Ancestry.com's Expert Connect had offered. This site has actually been in operation BEFORE Expert Connect.

Please check out Genealogy Freelancers at:

Genealogytreefreelancers.com has the same 'Leaf' logo as Ancestry.com and Rootsweb their affliate. I am curious whether is is also associated the all the other affliates of LDS.

I am very disappointed that Ancestry.com canceled their program "Expert Connect" However, there are excellent services outside of this program of a higher standard. Freelancers is not bad, however, there is an exceptional Professional Genealogy Research Service at www.americanancestors.info

This Service concentrates on Large Family Research.

As a professional genealogist that was a part of Expert Connect since it was a pilot, I to am disappointed a wonderful service for both clients and pro's alike is no more.

However, Genealogyfreelancers is way below standards of the true professional.

Look at this way...would you buy a car that looks good, costs 10.00, and gives you problems down the road that end up costing you more in the long run? or would you buy the next car that isn't all shiny, BUT you know you won't have to invest further, and it will last many many years to come.

Please, when hiring a true professional...don't settle for a hobbiest to do your professional work..go for one who understands the APG " Genealogical Proof Standard".

Just because someone has been doing their family research along with friends for 15 years...doesn't make them a pro.

The Association of Professional Genealogists has a list anyone can view to locate a professional in their area.

As I member of both Genealogy Freelancers as well as the Association of Professional Genealogists, I take offense in the comments left by Suzanne. I suggest that she check out her facts BEFORE making such comments. The CEO of GF verifies the credentials of those claiming to be professional researchers. Expert Connect started out doing that and over the past year began letting those who were not even members of any genealogical society do research. I personally have created over 250 family trees and I do not use the "cut & paste" method. I back up all my trees with actual records and genealogical literature. Many of my projects are in genealogical archives and societies across the South.
