Genealogy Reality Show Set for April Premiere
Posted by Diane

A genealogy-reality TV show-in-production we highlighted in the September 2008 Family Tree Magazine has a premiere date: April 20 at 8 p.m., according to the Hollywood Reporter. It'll air on Mondays.

Modeled after Britain’s successful “Who Do You Think You Are” series, the show will have professional genealogists tracing the roots of celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker and Susan Sarandon.

See a description on NBC’s Web site.

The last thing this country needs is another TV show about celebrities! I am really tired of the obsession with celebrities. But, the show should get more people interested in genealogy and show some of the basic ways to find ancestors. But, I shall not be watching the program.

I know what you mean! I'll be watching, but I'm counting on the focus being the history and ancestors, rather than parties and designer purses.

Another reality show about anything makes me gag! As Rodger said, maybe it will get some additional people interested in who they are, rather than who some celebrity calls their ancestor!

If they would do the series like the one on PBS then I would think about watching it. I liked the one PBS did where Chris Rock didn't know anything about his ancestors and found out things he didn't expect.

Well, I plan to watch - I don't care who they are profiling, I like the actual research process. Then again, it will be kind of fascinating to see what "regular" people that celebrities really are with this type of show. It seems like it wouldn't be so much about them being a celebrity, but rather where and how they came to be as a person. The celebrity angle is probably necessary to get a wider audience interested in the beginning - maybe if it is a hit, they will start doing some not so famous folks. This excites me!

I too would like a program on genealogy that focuses on the genealogical aspect and not "Hollywood." We are not all enthralled with "Hollwood."

I do genealogy to get AWAY from everything Hollywood. I am soooo tired of them preaching to us about everything and anything. Genealogy research is the antithesis of Hollywood - fact versus fiction. I think a great program would be to take interesting artifacts in museums and research the genealogy of who owned them and what the story of their lives was. Give me a good program on methodology - without Hollywood in it - and I'll watch faithfully!

I liked the PBS program and the fact that most people don't really know their "roots" and where they actually come from and how their ancestors got to the USA. A sprinkle of "ordinary" folks, not celebrities in the program would be interesting as well. I hope it is a balanced program and doesn't focus on the celebrity but instead on HOW that person came to be who they are. I will definitely watch and judge from what I see before I decide whether or not it is interesting enough to continue watching on a regular basis. Not to watch and pre-judge seems to me to be very closed minded. Leita
