Just noticed in your recent email; "Genealogy Newsletter" that during the month of February there was a "Who do you think you are" giveaway...by entering the sweepstakes by commenting on the Genealogy Insider blog and our Facebook fan page.

Sure wish I had known about this earlier. As I would have liked to have told my story. Guess, I will go there soon and tell my story....

I began my research in 1978 at the age of 18. In 1996, I came across a newspaper article in the Morgan County Library in Martinsville, Indiana that stated there was published in the Indianapolis Star (December 1936) an article regarding my 2nd great-grandfather's sister, "Mrs. Rachel Perry Nearing Century Mark". In the article Rachel stated that "her grandmother was a cousin of George Washington".

Thus, began my 14 year search to determine if I was related to President George Washington. In 1996, I didn't even know the surnames of Rachel's Grandmothers!

Years later, I determined, it would probably be the "Pierce" line from Virgina. Finally, this past November I indeed discover the my "Pierce" line married a "Merriweather", which married a "Bushrod" and that the family legend was true! I was related to Pres. Washington, however by marriage. My 7th great-grandmother; Elizabeth Bushrod-Merriweather (1696/8-1739), nice Hannah Bushrod (1738-1801, wealthy heiress to a substantial tabacco fortune) had married George's FULL brother, Col. John Augustine Washington (1736-1787)!

John was the estate manager for George at Mount Vernon for a few years before they moved to her father's planation; Bushfield Manor. In additon, I discovered Pres. Washington left his sister-in-law, Hannah Bushrod-Washington a mourning ring! Another discovery was on January 18, 2011, that Keno's Actions in NY was auctioning a "Mourning Brooch of Col. John Augustine Washington & Wife". Hair from both in brooch and monogram reading JAW. The est. price to be $1,500-$2,500. How wonderful to see the photo of this brooch!!!

In addition, I discovered a wonderful surprise....that my 7th great-grandparents; Elizabeth Bushrod-Merriweather and Col. William Merriwether were the great-grandparents to Merriwether Lewis, of the Lewis & Clark Explorer's. I was blood related to Merriweather Lewis! WOW!

In November, prior to discovering this information, I was just about ready to stop this particular search after 14 years. Had discovered several other prominent virginia ancestors along the way...many wonder stories. However, I had decided I would continue for another month or two and said some prayers. Now, I considered these discoveries were the BEST Christmas Gift ever!
